Trump Administration Withdraws From UN Human Rights Council

[dropcap]N[/dropcap]ikki Haley, the U.S ambassador to the United Nations announced at a press conference yesterday that the U.S will leave the international organizations Human Right’s Council.

The exit comes after the UN denounced the U.S for separating migrant children from their families at the border–a policy which has caused a national outcry.

The administration claims that the UN is biased against Israel’s treatment of Palestinians and makes a mockery out of human rights–by ignoring many of the atrocities that happen around the world–and allowing human rights violators to serve as board members.

“We take this step because our commitment does not allow us to remain a part of an hypocritical and self-serving organisation that makes a mockery of human rights,” Ms Haley said.”

The United States, North Korea, Eritrea and Iran are the only countries that will not participate in the council’s meetings and deliberations. The exit marks the first time that a country has left the UN voluntarily. The New York Times Reports:

“Mr. Trump has turned decades of American foreign policy on its head by attacking or undermining much of the rules-based order that the United States established after World War II. Previous administrations viewed the interlocking network of alliances, trade rules.”
