Oakland, CA—-Thirty years ago today, Huey P. Newton, co-founder of the Black Panther Party was shot and killed.
A few days later, police arrested Tyrone Robinson, a 27-year-member of the Black Guerrilla Family. Although Robinson claimed he shot Huey in self defense, police found no evidence of a gun in Huey’s possession.
Robinson is currently in prison for the murder, where he is charged with the 2016 murder of his cell mate at Corcoran Prison.
Huey’s death echoes the tragic lost of Black America’s brightest revolutionary leaders, especially under suspicious circumstances. It is a sad reminder that to maintain leadership in our communities, it seems our “leaders” have to be O.K’d by white America to have longevity.
Huey’s courage, and intellect that was used to directly challenge the condition of poor Black’s in America, is one of the main reasons America focuses so much time and money on keeping Black America in a state of arrested development.
Through media and promoting hyper sexuality in our music, ensures that Black America do not rise up again like the Black Panther Party. The establishments worst nightmare is when Black America begins questioning what is being done to our communities and demanding accountability in large numbers.
Only then, can we hope to experience true change for our people and freedom from white supremacy.
Rest in Power Huey. Your essence will be forever missed.
