South Central, CA—It appears that the gentrification process within the Slauson and Crenshaw community is well underway.
There was a slight hold up. Gang-members who belong to the rolling 60’s Crip gang, frequent the strip mall parking lot on the corner of Crenshaw and Slauson.
The lot is prime real estate, especially with the new Metro rail expected to be completed soon. People traveling from LAX will have the opportunity to stop at Slauson and Crenshaw, and now a monument honoring the late Nipsey Hussle will bring people from all over the world.
It is bittersweet Nipsey Hussle will not see the development, as these were part of his plans.
The whole structure will be torn down to erect residential apartments on-top of retail space. The goal is one hundred units and six stories up.
Plans were supposed to begin 18 months after Nipsey Hussle and his business partner David Gross purchased the property earlier this year.
Since Nipsey’s murder, it appears plans have been sped up. Five months after his assassination, a fence was erected around the whole parking lot of the Marathon Clothing store yesterday. Nipsey Hussle operates several businesses in the lot including a newly built barbershop in honor of his late friend Fats, a cajun restaurant currently under construction, a phone shop and The Marathon Clothing.
The timing comes as fans created fliers for events at the Marathon store to commemorate Nipsey Hussle birthday August 15. Police are preparing a heavy presence in the area on his birthday, with 100 plain clothes officers expected to be in the area.
The New York Times revealed the LAPD have been corresponding with Mr. Gross to anty up security measures at the lot since Nipsey’s passing. They suggested armed security. Mr. Gross appears to have declined.
The fence around the lot so abruptly, could also be to appease city leaders who are determined to label the property a public nuisance.
