Leimert Park Community Fridge Closes Due To Sanitation Concerns

Leimert Park, CA–In case you missed it, Leimert Park Community Fridge is no longer outside of Hot and Cool Cafe. After a year of providing free produce and essentials during the Coronavirus pandemic, In July, they were forced to end this act of kindness and mutual over sanitation concerns.

Community refrigerators became extremely popular during the coronavirus pandemic. Bronx, New York was one of the first areas where a refrigerator was plugged outside a local business, offering free food and produce to those who walked by.

Last year, I had the opportunity to interview Kennedy Mitchell, who was joined by Abby Magallanes, and Fawlene Copeland, to talk about the Leimert Park fridge on a warm July day at Hot and Cool. The trio represented only half of those involved in the community fridge project.

The Leimert Park fridge was made possible thanks to a donation by Los Angeles Community Fridges, a mutual aid group who were inspired by the work being done in New York.
