South Central, Los Angeles–If you’re looking for delicious food served with a side of inspiration, make your way to Mr. Taste Budz in Los Angeles. Mr. Taste Budz is the brainchild of local entrepreneur Jamell Paxton who grew up in South Central.

Each detail, from the family-inspired décor to the delicious menu, is a reflection of Mr. Taste Budz’ belief in uplifting South Central.

“We serve a variety of foods, I have hot Cheeto burritos with steak and cheese, I have oxtail burritos. I have gumbo burritos, we also have pastrami tacos, fried crab, fried salmon. One of my favorites is the oxtail cheese fries,” Paxton shared.

His journey began humbly, selling food from a taco cart at different events throughout Los Angeles, after coming home from prison in 2019.

Over the years, this evolved into a food truck and, now, a brick-and-mortar restaurant. Paxton’s story is not just about good food—it’s a testament to the power of perseverance, vision, and an unbreakable bond with one’s roots.

I always had to help out in the kitchen when my mom couldn’t. When she would leave and go to work, she got the roast in the oven. Guess who would make the roast. So, when she come home she get to eat and the kids get to eat.

Upon entering Mr. Taste Budz, visitors are greeted by walls adorned with art that tells a story. Photographs of his mother, Ms. Sherri, are prominently displayed, making sure her spirit remains at the heart of the establishment.

Murals painted by his cousin and a local Black artist who had never painted professionally before, depict striking art and images of Black superheroes. These heroes are a reflection of Paxton’s personal journey of overcoming challenges to inspire his community.

All my other art comes from my little cousin. I always promised that if I ever got a spot I would make it his art gallery, and that’s what we did.
