Los Angeles, CA–Four Australians & two American citizens were arrested Friday, after police seized over 1,700 kilograms at the Los Angeles-Long Beach port.
The shipment was bound for Australia and authorities are calling the seizure the largest bust for meth bound for overseas.The meth was hidden inside metal boxes that were labeled as speakers.
Smaller amounts of cocaine and heroin were also found.
The amount seized at the ports would have provided over 17 million hits of meth, which has the reported street value of $500 in Australia per gram.
There is currently a rising meth epidemic in Australia where the drug is known as “ice.” Authorities say that Mexican cartels are now setting their sights on Australia to include in their drug smuggling operations.
