John Singleton’s mother is trying to be named his conservator, citing he is unable to make decisions for himself after suffering a stroke.
The Boyz n The Hood director was hospitalized April 17 after what was initially reported as a mild stroke.
Reports released today, claim that Singleton is currently in a coma. His family released the following statement:
“On Wednesday, April 17th, our beloved son/father, John Singleton, suffered a stroke while at the hospital. John is currently in the ICU and under great medical care. We ask that privacy be given to him and our family at this time and appreciate all of the prayers that have been pouring in from his fans, friends and colleagues.”
Singleton’s mother, Shiela Ward, has now filed court documents to be named conservator of his affairs due to a financial emergency.
Prior to his stroke, Singleton was involved with several deals and may suffer financial loss if a conservator is not appointed.
A physicians review of Singleton submitted with the court filing note he is currently suffering motor skill impairment as well as the inability to “reason logically.”
“At the time he suffered a stroke,” Ward states, “[Singleton] was engaged in several business projects and was prepared to sign a lucrative settlement agreement … A temporary conservator must be appointed immediately and without notice as a legal representative must be in place to make medical decisions for my son to handle his business affairs and to execute the aforementioned settlement agreement on or about April 30, 2019.”
In 1992, Singleton’s film Boyz n the Hood made him the youngest and first African-American to be nominated for an Academy Award.
