Compton, CA–This weekend I was invited to a video recording that was being done in the city of Compton, to help promote unity and peace between the Black and Brown communities in Los Angeles County.
In recent weeks, videos have begun circulating showing misguided Black youth assaulting street vendors from the Latino community, immediately prompting outrage from the Latino community online.
These videos went viral and the thousands of anti-black comments calling for the kids to be killed and calling Black people “Niggas” were hard to ignore.
The comments made many in the Black community say anti-blackness existed in the Latino community long before the videos.
The reality of the matter is that the Black and Brown communities share a common experience that labels our communities as the “other” despite the fact that our people built this country and continue to be the working-class labor force fueling the economy.
It was a beautiful thing to see Black and Brown people come out on a Saturday not to right the wrongs on behalf on themselves or their families, but because they would like to see unity between these two communities.
I was also asked to pen an article for one of my favorite Los Angeles publications, L.A Taco, on the ways Black and Brown people are coming together to combat the rising online tensions due to the these disrespectful videos.
