Long Beach, CA– Long Beach Police Department released the following statement after a shooting early this morning which left five people wounded and one person fatally shot.
“On Saturday, May 18, 2019 at approximately 12:40 a.m., a Marine Patrol officer was in the 1600 block of West Pacific Coast Highway when he heard a shooting, which resulted in the death of a female adult and injured five others.
Immediately, the Marine Patrol officer notified the Long Beach Communications Center of the shooting and additional patrol units were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, officers contacted six victims, three male adults and three female adults, with varying gunshot wounds. The Long Beach Fire Department responded and determined one female adult victim deceased at the scene.
The three male victims and the second female victim were transported to a local hospital by the Long Beach Fire Department with gunshot wounds to their upper torsos. The male victims’ injuries are all non-life threatening and the second female victim is in critical but stable condition.The third female victim self-transported to a local hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to her lower torso.
The victim is only being identified as a 57-year-old resident of Ontario, pending notification of next of kin by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
Through their preliminary investigation, Homicide Detectives believe a group of people were gathered in the parking lot of a local business that boarders an isolated, industrial area in West Long Beach for a vigil for an individual who had recently died, when an unknown number of suspects began shooting.
A description of the suspect(s) and the motive for the shooting is not known at this time. Detectives are working diligently to gather additional information through the ongoing investigation.
The Long Beach Police Department is utilizing all its resources to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors city-wide. Patrols have been augmented in all areas of the city, providing additional officers to respond to calls for service.
