Fort Worth, Texas–A Texas police officer has been arrested and charged in the shooting death of Atatiana “Tay” Jefferson. Jefferson, 28, was playing video games with her nephew when police approached her home around 2:25 a.m, responding to a call of an “open structure.” According to the Washington Post:

“While searching the outside of the house, police said, an officer saw someone standing near a window, and, “perceiving a threat, the officer drew his duty weapon and fired one shot striking the person inside the residence.”

Jefferson was pronounced dead at the scene. Jefferson’s older sister describes her as a smart, ambitious and kind person with a nurturing spirit.

“She said her sister was a pre-med graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana, who dropped her career ambitions to return home to Texas to care for their ailing mother. She said Jefferson was also helping their sister, Amber, who recently underwent heart surgery, raise her two young children, including their 8-year-old nephew, Zion, who witnessed her being shot to death,” (ABC news)

Dean attempted to resign before he was fired.

The record will still reflect that Dean, a peace officer since 2018, was dishonorably discharged from the police department.
