ANTIOCH, Tenn. —Emanuel Kidega Samson, 25, opened fire at the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in Antioch, Tennesse Sunday morning, killing one woman and injuring six others.
Witnesses say the gunman, who was caught by police, entered the church dressed as a clown.
“This is a mass casualty situation. All of the wounded have been transported to area hospitals. The majority are older adults,” the Nashville Fire Department tweeted.
It is not yet clear the extent of the victim’s injuries.
It has now been revealed that a note was found in the shooter’s car which mentioned the Charleston shooting. Police are citing the references made in the note as a possible motive.
Dylan Roof, 21, was convicted last year and sentenced to death after he walked into Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C and shot 9 people before fleeing on foot.
Danny Carter, a congregant at the church, described the scene:
“It was just major chaos. I didn’t see the shooter until he came through the door. I basically hollered for people to get down and at that point, the shooter was basically the only one up moving until Mr. Engel (the church usher hailed as a hero) saw him and confronted him.”
Samson is Sudanese with legal US residency.
Church members told police Samson attended the church one to two years ago, but that they had not seen him in a while and did not immediately recognize him because he was masked.
