Los Angeles, CA–The son of Oakland City Councilwoman Lynette Gibson McElhaney was killed this morning about a mile from USC’s campus.

Victor McElhaney transferred to USC in 2017, where he was studying Jazz. Authorities say he was shot and killed a little after midnight in an attempted robbery.

The loss is the second for Councilwoman McElhaney.

In 2015, she lost Torian Hughes, whom she helped raised in a shooting and robbery attempt.

In 2017, Councilwoman McElhaney helped promote a campaign for the Department of Violence Prevention, a measure voted on and approved by Oakland City Council.

The news of McElhaney’s death comes a day after a fourth person was convicted in the 2014 beating death of a Chinese graduate student.

The safety of USC student continues to raise concerns. The school is nestled in and around South Central, which is Los Angeles’s notorious inner city community. A community that continues to be plagued by poverty and gun violence.
