Dallas County, Texas–After a week long trial, a jury has found former Texas Police Officer Roy Oliver guilty in the shooting death of 15-year-old Jordan Edwards. Edwards was leaving a house-party April 29, 2017 and was shot in the head after Oliver opened fire into the car Edwards was in with two of his brothers. Oliver stated in trial that he feared for his partners life. His partner however, testified that he was never in fear of his life.

The verdict comes at a time when civil rights activist and lawyers around the country are tirelessly trying to gain convictions on behalf of civilians killed at the hands of police officers. The verdict serves as hope for those who embark on the daunting journey, that the courts are starting to bend towards more accountability of police.

In Los Angeles County, there have been over 1000 police killings and mostly non of these cases have resulted in convictions of the officers, according to the Los Angeles Times.
