Compton, CA–The world learned the devastating news yesterday, that the iconic and respected actor Michael K. Williams was found dead in his New York apartment by a relative. Williams was said to have been scheduled for an event on Saturday and when he did not show, a relative went his apartment where Williams was discovered.

Today, Compton City Councilwoman Michelle Chambers released the following statement on the passing of her brother:

“Our family has been shaken to the core of the loss of our Mike. Thank you to everyone who contacted us, flooded us with love, and more importantly, prayers. I will miss my brother, my best friend and birthday partner in this realm, but I know he will continue to watch over me and our family in heaven as he did on earth.”

Although very few details have been released, it is suspected that Williams death was caused by an overdose.

Williams was well known for his role as Omar in the hit HBO series, “The Wire.” Most recently his Film and T.V credits include “Lovecraft Country”, “Empire,” as well as his last movie “Body Brokers,” which eerily touches on the money network within the world of drug addiction and treatment. Williams has over 30+ film credits and first got his start in entertainment as a back-up dancer for artists like Madonna.

During his early years as he transitioned from back-up dancing to more grittier roles in music videos, Williams worked with Tupac who got him his first role in the 1996 movie “Bullet.”

Williams says that the scar across his face came after he was slashed one night outside a party. This scar would come to be a defining feature of Williams, that landed him movie roles and interest from producers and photographers.

The news comes on the heels of Stand-up comic Fuquan Johnson, who along with two others died over the weekend at a party in Venice from a fentanyl drug overdose.
