The City of Los Angeles hosted a ground breaking ceremony Mar. 19 for the $70 million renovation project at Magic Johnson Park. The renovations will provide a dramatic transformation to the park which is located in the Los Angeles/Willowbrook area.

Famed basketball star and businessman Magic Johnson made an appearance at the park for the groundbreaking ceremony.

“The $70-million first phase of the project called for building amenities that do not currently exist in South LA. This includes a 20,000-sq. ft. community events center to host conferences, weddings and other large gatherings.

Improvements also include an outdoor wedding pavilion, a splash pad, children’s play areas, better security lighting, walking paths and parking lots. The first phase will be completed in 2020,” (The Los Angeles Sentinel).

S.J. Amoroso Construction Company have been contracted on the project. The company is required to provide at least 30% of construction hours to residents who live within a five mile radius of the park.

The plan was designed by the landscape architecture firm AHBE and adopted by the City of Los Angeles in 2015.

There are even talks of a museum at the location.

Los Angeles County Museum of Art director Michael Govan was one of the scheduled speakers for the groundbreaking ceremony.

  1. Good information. I am interested in following the development of the events at the park. I know there has been some problems because the soil and water was contamination. I also know there was some people protesting that day due to environmental concerns. And I would like to have additional information about the work they do. I am an artist interested in environmental topics and community participation. Do you think you could help me? I will appreciate that.
    Thanks in advance,
